Position Descriptions

Shop Stewards:

Are you a trusted person in your branch? Do you like to know what’s going on? The Shop Steward position may be right for you!

Shop Stewards are a point of contact for their branch and/or region. They pass on information to the Eboard and to Members. Stewards can also sit in on grievances and do New Employee Outreach (NEOs). We are always looking for more Stewards!

Communications Committee Members:

  • Goal: Improve awareness of the work the union is doing, encourage engagement with the union and generally increase union visibility.
  • Tools We Use: website, texts, emails, bulletin board, steward network.
  • Tasks: Some members work individually on specific activities (website, emails from Council 2, text alerts, plus more). All members participate in meetings and email discussion, offering ideas, insights, opinions, etc.

Executive Board (Eboard elections are held in November):

Member-at-Large on the Eboard (1 year term):

There are eight Member-at-Large positions on the Eboard. The positions are annual and run from November to November.

If you have questions about what this position entails, or are willing to volunteer, please reach out to a Board member. We are always happy to have more new faces in an active role in our Union. Typically the position is one where you are available for the monthly E-Board or General Membership meetings and serve as a voting member of the Eboard.

President (2 year term):

The President is responsible for triaging member issues and either responding or passing them on to the correct person (they get A LOT of emails). They write the monthly Missives and run the Eboard meetings, General Membership meetings, and Listening Sessions. The President attends all Joint Labor Meetings (JLMC) with HR, the VP, and our Staff Rep and attends grievances, disciplinary meetings, and investigations. They are one of the key people for any bargaining sessions and negotiations.

Recommended: Good with details and deadlines, strong communication and writing skills, able to handle stressful situations

Vice President/Chief Shop Steward (2 year term):

The Vice President also serves as the Chief Shop Steward. They support the President and manage the Stewards. They are also in charge of New Employee Outreach (previously New Employee Orientations) and responsible for training Stewards to give NEOs and ensuring that all new hires are given an orientation within the first 30 days of hire. The VP attends all JLMC sessions with HR, the President, and our Staff Rep and runs the monthly Listening Sessions.

Recommended: Good with people, able to handle stressful situations

Treasurer (2 year term):

The Treasurer position is in charge of doing the monthly and annual financial reports, receipt and disbursement journals, audits, official document retention, and is in charge of the check book and bank account. They are one of three check signers on the bank account and work with the President and VP to pay bills and reimburse members. The position requires strict adherence to the Financial Standards Code from AFSCME.

Recommended: Math, Excel, organization skills, and strict deadlines

Secretary (2 year term):

The Secretary is primarily responsible for attending all Eboard and General Membership meetings and taking minutes. The minutes must be finalized between meetings and sent to the Eboard for review. Eboard meeting minutes are ratified at the next Eboard meeting by motion. General Membership meeting minutes are ratified at the next General Membership meeting by motion.

Recommended: Strong typing skills, editing and proofreading skills

Trustee (3 year term):

There are three Trustees and they are responsible for doing the annual financial audit, following the instructions from AFSCME’s financial standards handbook. It’s normally one day of work per year, sometime in the spring or early summer. They review all of the document retention for the previous year to make sure all files are present and accounted for and that there are no errors or discrepancies in the financial reports.

Recommended: Attention to detail and patience, good with very long check lists
